Up-and-Coming//Jennifer Lawrence

Up-and-Coming is a new feature here in which I will take time to examine certain actors/actresses, directors, movies, TV shows, and so on as a preview of things that will be making an impact on the film world in the future. Jennifer Lawrence is the topic of the pilot of this feature, mainly for the reason that she has quickly made a huge name for herself in Hollywood and being only 22 years old, we can definitely expect to see more of.

“There are actresses who build themselves, and then there are actresses who are built by others. I want to build myself.”-Jennifer Lawrence

Lawrence burst onto the scene with the huge blockbuster hit, The Hunger Games, last year. Before then she had really invested her abilities to smaller indie productions. She struck gold later in 2012 with her performance in Silver Linings Playbook directed by David O. Russell where she worked with established actors like Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper. This performance earned her a much deserved Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. She has impressed us all, to say in the least, and is an actress we can definitely predict to having a long and successful career in years to come.

Notable Roles

Lawrence has been a favorite actress of mine lately, not just because of her talents, but because she seems like such a down to earth person as well. She is an actress that has had to work hard to where she is today, and doesn’t do it for the fame and money. She seems very aware of what the major success of Hollywood can do to an actor. When asked about how she made the decision to say yes to her role in The Hunger Games, Lawrence said that while talking to her mom about it her mom said “Every time people ask you why you don’t do studio movies, you say it’s because you don’t care about the size of the movie, you care about the story and the character. But you’re a hypocrite because you have a story and a character that you love, but you’re not saying yes to it because of the size of it.”

She’s also very aware of how she has become both a sex symbol and a role model. She refused to diet for her role as Katniss Everdeen because she did not want to project the look of an unhealthy body as any way glamorous. And despite allegations that she is considered a “fat actress”, she continues to state that she will not starve herself for a role. Annnddd ladies and gentlemen, that is why Jennifer Lawrence is such a badass. Despite being so young, she is definitely very wise and I can only hope we get more actresses like her!

“I’m never going to starve myself for a part. I keep waiting for that one role to come along that scares me enough into dieting, and it just can’t happen. I’m invincible … I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumors.”- Jennifer Lawrence

     upcoming roles

If you were a fan of Silver Linings, you’ll be happy to know that it looks like Lawrence will be co-starring with Bradley Cooper in not just one, but two of her upcoming films. One of which, American Hustle, is directed by the very same David O. Russell and will also star the one and only, Robert De Niro. The other one, Serena, looks promising as well. Set during the Depression, it’s about the two’s relationship once they find out that she cannot have kids. Her most anticipated film would have to be The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by far, though, and I’m personally very excited to see that one. The first Hunger Games was definitely no Twilight (very good thing) and left us wanting more of this mega series. It doesn’t look like Jennifer Lawrence is slowing down at all. Pretty soon (if not already) she will definitely be an actress to be reckoned with.

She has definitely made a name for herself really in just 2012 alone. And with an Oscar win, along with her nomination for Winter’s Bone back in 2010, and 48 other awards, her career has been very impressive thus far. At only the age of 22 though, this makes me very excited to see what she has in store for us in years to come!

Check out this trailer for Catching Fire….chills, man….chills.
